Graveyard Shift

October 28th, 2009

So…how did the graveyard shift get its name? Back in the 1800′s before modern medicine many people were literally buried alive. To combat this, people were buried with a string tied to their finger, in the event that they might awake from their coma, etc and ring a bell attached to the aforementioned string. This would alert the cemetery employee on duty…Is this a true story? I’m not sure, but it’s relevant because I am working the graveyard shift this week, and I feel like a zombie right about now.

New Webcam on jimhanley.com

October 18th, 2009

The latest addition to the jimhanley.com web page is the webcam image. It took me a couple of evenings of reading, etc. but with the help of a free program called YAWCAM, I was able to accomplish this feat! This software has an ftp upload component which makes getting started quite simple with only basic knowledge. Right now it is sending a new image to jimhanley.com every 30 seconds, and the web page itself is set to refresh every 30 seconds, hence you should see a new image every…you guessed it….every 30 seconds.

My next goal is to get it to stream live, which is also possible using YAWCAM, but I seem to be having some IP address issues and am thus seeing some errors. So I’ll just keep on reading and experimenting and eventually you will see a live streaming camera from my house. If there is anybody out there reading this, that can give me some pointers, please leave a message in the ‘comments’… Thanks
